Tidal Wave (Korean: 해운대; RR: Haeundae) is a 2009 South Korean disaster film directed by Yoon Je-kyoon and starring Sol Kyung-gu, Ha Ji-won, Park Joong-hoon and Uhm Jung-hwa. Billed as South Korea's first disaster film,^[1] the film released theatrically on 22 July 2009 and received more than 11 million admissions nationwide.^[2]

Plot[edit]

Located on the southeastern tip of the Korean Peninsula, the Haeundae district of Busan draws one million visitors to its beaches every year. The film follows the stories of many characters who all get caught up in a terrible tsunami in which they must make life-or-death decisions.

Five years ago, Man-sik, a Haeundae local, lost Yeon-hee's father due to his mistake in the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. Because of this, he could not become involved with Yeon-hee, who runs an unlicensed seafood restaurant, despite her attempts to start a relationship.

Dong-choon and Seung-hyun's grandma team up with Seung-hyun and get involved with some illegal activity to earn money, but end up getting caught by the police. Man-sik finally plans to propose to Yeon-hee.

Geologist Kim Hwi runs into his divorced wife, Yoo-jin. Although Yoo-jin has a daughter named Ji-min and a new boyfriend Hae-chan, they decide not to tell their daughter that Hwi is her real father as they are worried how she might react.

A wealthy college student from Seoul, Hee-mi, accidentally falls into the sea from a yacht. Hyeong-sik, Man-sik's younger brother, is a lifeguard who rescues Hee-mi. Hee-mi becomes angered by the 'violent' rescue and annoys him by following him around and the two begin to fall in love.

Hwi notices that the Sea of Japan (East Sea) is displaying similar activity to the Indian Ocean at the time of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. The Disaster Prevention Agency assures him that South Korea is at no risk, but a megatsunami soon forms near Japan and starts to travel towards Haeundae. Hwi realizes that the citizens of Haeundae have only 10 minutes to escape. There is a short earthquake (a little aftershock) at Haeundae. The sea starts receding from the shore, causing mass hysteria as people realize that a tsunami is coming. Thousands of people run for their lives, but the tsunami reaches Haeundae. Dong-choon, Seung-hyun, his grandma, and other people on the Gwangan Bridge are swept away by the sea. A telephone pole collapses, electrocuting everyone in the water, but Man-sik and Yeon-hee survive. Dong-choon awakens on the bridge, but when he tries and fails to light a cigarette, and subsequently discards the lighter out of frustration, it falls into petrol leaking from a tanker, causing an explosion that severs the bridge in half and sends shipping containers flying into buildings on the shore.

Hyeong-sik jumps down from a rescue helicopter and saves Hee-mi in the sea. When Hyeong-sik and the rest of the group are together on the rope, Hyeong-sik realizes that the rope is about to break and only one can go up to the helicopter. He cuts the rope he is connected to and falls into the violent sea. The elevator Yoo-jin is trapped in floods with water, and she talks in tears to her daughter Ji-min on her phone. Yoo-jin is saved by a worker. On the roof, she meets Ji-min and Hwi. The two help their daughter get on a crowded rescue helicopter. Before the helicopter leaves, Hwi tells his daughter that he is really her father. Yoo-jin and Hwi hug each other before they are killed.

After the tsunami, there is a funeral for the thousands of people who were killed. Among the dead is Hyeong-sik and Man-sik's uncle. Dong-choon finds out that his mother died as well and breaks into tears. Many people help reconstruct the city. Man-sik, while cleaning the ruins of Yeon-hee's restaurant, finds the red ribbon which Yeon-hee said was a 'yes' to his proposal. The movie ends with a scene of Haeundae in ruins, but in a hopeful atmosphere.

Release[edit]

Distribution rights for Haeundae was sold to Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, France, Quebec, Brazil, United Kingdom, Australia and Turkey.^[3][4][5][6] The film was released in South Korea on 22 July 2009. As of 20 September 2009, Haeundae had received a total of 11,301,649 admissions in South Korean theatres.^[7]

In English-speaking countries, the film was released as Tidal Wave (which is an incorrect term for its theme and should actually be 'Tsunami'). In the United Kingdom, the DVD was released on October 12, 2009 from Entertainment One.^[8]

Tilly Smith (born 1994) is an English woman who has been credited with saving the lives of about 100 beachgoers at Maikhao Beach in Thailand by warning them minutes before the arrival of the tsunami caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake.^[1][2] Smith, who was ten years old at the time, had learned about tsunamis in her geography class.

Early life[edit]

Smith learned about tsunamis in a geography lesson^[3][4] two weeks before the tsunami from her teacher Andrew Kearney at Danes Hill School^[5] in Oxshott, Surrey.^[6][7] She recognised the signs of receding water from the shoreline and frothing bubbles on the surface of the sea and alerted her parents, who warned others on the beach and the staff at the hotel in Phuket where they were staying.^[8] The beach was evacuated before the tsunami reached shore, and was one of the few beaches on the island with no reported casualties.^[9][10]

Smith's family declined requests to be interviewed by commercial and national broadcasters, but Smith appeared at the United Nations in November 2005, where she met the U.N. Special Envoy for Tsunami Relief, Bill Clinton,^[1][11][12] and at the first anniversary in Phuket, as part of a campaign to highlight the importance of education.

Smith was educated at Danes Hill School, an independent school in the village of Oxshott in Surrey, followed by Stowe School, a boarding independent school in the civil parish of Stowe in Buckinghamshire.

Awards and recognition[edit]

On 9 September 2005 Smith received the Thomas Gray Special Award of The Marine Society & Sea Cadets from Second Sea Lord, Vice-Admiral Sir James Burnell-Nugent.^[5][7]

Asteroid 20002 Tillysmith has been named after her.^[13]

In December 2005, Smith was named 'Child of the Year' by the French magazine Mon Quotidien (a magazine targeted to young readers).^[1][8] At the official tsunami commemorations on the first anniversary of the tsunami held at Khao Lak, Thailand on 26 December 2005, she was given the honour of reading a poem to thousands of spectators.^[14]

'It wasn't devastation or death that won the day. It was humanity that triumphed, the shining victory of generosity, courage, love.'

Smith's story is incorporated into many teaching resources for children about earthquakes, tsunamis and how to stay safe.^{[1][8][14][16]}
