Block Adobe Acrobat Updater

Adobe Reader and Acrobat can regularly check for important updates and install them for you. These updates can include important security fixes and product enhancements.

Disable automatic updates reader. I need to disable auto updates on Adobe Reader. It seems this new version of Reader XI doesn't have the option in preferences. Please point me in. Remove update files. I have Acrobat Pro v9. I have been updating this program over time and found that the updater stores update (or backup) files in the C: Documents and Settings All Users Application Data Adobe Adobe PDF folder. This junk is now taking up more than 750MB of file space on my C: drive and I only have about 520MB free. Like me, if you are also annoyed with Adobe auto-updater popping up and freezing the application you can completely disable the feature in the latest version of Adobe Acrobat reader 8.1, just follow the steps below to disable Adobe updater. Adobe Acrobat Reader DC is set up for automatic updates by default. It does not provide any UI option in the preferences to control this setting. IT Administrators can control the update settings using the Adobe Customization Wizard DC or the Windows Registry.

You cannot change updater preferences for Adobe Acrobat Reader DC.

Start the Adobe Updater application from /Applications/Utilities/Adobe Utilities/Adobe Updater5/. When the update screen appears, click the Preferences link. Uncheck the Automatically Check for updates checkbox and click OK. If your computer does not have an internet connection, then you can manually edit the AdobeUpdaterPreferences.dat file.

Updates are delivered via two options:

  • Install updates automatically (recommended): Acrobat Reader DC and Acrobat DC regularly checks for important updates, downloads them, and installs them automatically. When finished, you are alerted via a small message in the system tray that your software has been updated. This method is recommended since it does not require end-user intervention. It is the best way to keep Acrobat Reader DC and Acrobat DC up-to-date and more secure.
  • Manually check for and install updates: Acrobat Reader DC and Acrobat DC don't check for updates. Instead, the user selects Check for Updates. This option is the least secure, and only recommended in organizations that use other methods of deploying updates to their systems.

  • Notify me, but let me choose when to download and install updates: Adobe Reader and Acrobat notify the end user that an update is ready for download and install.
