Some printers come with scanning software which allows you to make many adjustments to something you've scanned; however, this software can be complicated and, at times, difficult to use. For simple scans - like pictures, flyers and word documents which you do not want to edit, it's often best to use the built-in Windows Program - Scanner and Camera Wizard. Here's how to use the program.

OS: windows XP Pro sp3Problem: We have a machine that has lost Scanner and Camera wizard from autoplay a few days ago after we moved this PC from a local Workgroup to a Domain. After moving it to the domain with the new user, we copied the Windows profile from the old local user to to the new domain user. Windows XP had a 'Scanner & Camera Wizard'. 1) Make sure your scanner is connected to your computer.
2) In Windows XP, go to the START Menu and click on ALL PROGRAMS. Next, go to ACCESSORIES. On that menu, you should find 'Scanner and Camera Wizard.' Click to activate the wizard.
3) The wizard will first search for your scanner and when it successfully finds it, the following opening screen will appear:
4) After clicking the next button at the bottom of the screen, this is what you will see:
Notice on the left side you are asked to choose what type of scan you want, e.g., color picture, grayscale picture, etc. In most cases, we have found that the best scan results come when you use the first choice - color picture, regardless of what you are scanning.
Once you have made your choice on the left, then click the PREVIEW button.
5) The scanner will run and a preview will appear similar to the one pictured here. Notice the dotted lines around the image - those lines can be moved to crop your image simply by using your mouse at any of the four sides - when the cursor turns to two arrows, you hold down the left mouse button and move the line where you want it.

7) Once you are happy with the preview, click NEXT. (By the way, if you aren't happy with how the preview looks, as an example, the scanned item is crooked on the scanner bed, you merely click BACK, adjust the item and hit preview again.)

The options which appear on this page are very important. In number 1, you type a name for your scanned item. In number 2, you select the format you want to save your item as. Notice there is a small down arrow. Click that for your options:
Once you've chosen the format, go to item number 3: where do you want the scanned item to be stored. You can use the BROWSE button to find the place on your computer for storage.
9) Click NEXT. After scanning your item and storing it as the format you wanted and in the place you requested, the following screen will show:
10) Click NEXT. The final screen of the wizard show.
Notice that you can go directly to the scanned item by clicking the location listed on this window. If you want to email your scanned item, click there.
11) In our example, we scanned a picture and placed it in 'My Pictures.' After we click on the final screen shown above, we get a screen like this one:
Two things to notice here: 1) the item we just scanned is outlined; and, 2) on the left side, there is an option 'E-mail this file.'
12) Click 'E-mail this file.'

The following small window will pop up, usually in the upper left-hand corner of your screen:
Generally speaking, it is best to choose the default option on this page which is to make all pictures smaller.
13) Click OK. Your default email client will appear and you send an email as you normally do with the scanned item already attached. Please not, if your email account is an online email like Yahoo, Hotmail, or G-mail, this method may not work - you may need to attach your scanned item directly instead of using the 'E-mail this file' option shown above.

You will usually here a sound when the device is plugged into the USB port on your computer. You will also have to turn the power button on for the camera. A computer cannot recognize it unless the power is on the camera.
Another way to tell if you have connected the camera to the computer is to go to my computer and verify that there is a camera icon there. This applies to both Windows XP and Windows Vista.
- Go to My Computer which is either an icon on your desktop or in the start menu in the bottom left corner. You can also access your camera from the control panel.
- Here you will see your camera appear. (see below)
- If the digital camera icon is there then your camera is connected properly.

If the Scanner and Camera wizard does not open when you plug your camera into your computer you can still see the camera in my computer.
Then you can start the Microsoft scanner and camera wizard yourself.
- Go to My Computer which is either an icon on your desktop or in the start menu in the bottom left corner. You can also access your camera from the control panel.
- Here you will see your camera appear. (see below)
- Double click on the digital camera icon.
- A box will appear showing what pictures are on your camera.
How to make the Microsoft Scanner and camera wizard start automatically?
- Follow steps one to four from above.
- Under the heading Camera Tasks, choose to Show camera properties. (you can also choose to Get Pictures from Camera to start the Wizard manually)
Choose the Events Tab from the top of the dialog box. See screen shot below.
- Here you can select an event. I chose that when the camera is connected it will automatically start Windows XP’s inbuilt scanner and camera wizard.
- There is also other software to choose from if you have more than one compatible photo transfer program installed on your computer
After you have completed these tasks you can test your changes by turning your camera on again. Then see what it does…The automatic scanner and camera wizard should appear.
How to make the Scanner and Camera Wizard automatically start in Windows Vista?
In Windows Vista you can also set the options to import pictures using Windows to do this automatically when you plug in your camera. unfortunately, there is no scan and camera wizard like there was in Windows XP, included in Windows Vista or Windows 7. Of course Windows will still extract your photos but it is missing some important options that this scanner and camera wizard previously had in Windows XP. How to choose which program to automatically download your pictures in Windows Vista?
1. Go to the start menu and choose Control Panel.
2. Click on classic view to see all the icons. In Windows 7 there is a little drop-down box. You do not want to see the categories you want to see the icons.

3. Double-click on the autoplay icon.
4. This is where you can change the settings for your Microsoft scanner and camera wizard to open automatically when you plug in your computer.
You might also prefer to use and other program that you have installed on your computer. This is your chance to choose that program instead of the automatic scan and camera wizard.

How to fix the Microsoft scanner and camera wizard in Windows XP?
You have the Microsoft scan at and camera wizard installed on your computer, but it is not working, you can go to the Microsoft download Center and get a tool to fix it. It is a free download and it will check to see if all your auto play settings are working. When you have downloaded this tool, plug-in your camera and this process will be checked to see if there is a problem.
I am presuming that this fix is just for a Windows XP computer.
Notes about the Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard:
- If there are no pictures it will say this and you will not have the option to go on. The automatic scanner and camera Wizard will only work if you have pictures on your digital camera.
- You also need to have a camera plugged in to see the Microsoft scanner and camera wizard appear.
- You do not always have to use the automatic scan and camera wizard as most digital cameras come with their own software. This is often better to use as it would have an editing program with it. For example if you have a Kodak camera it usually comes with the Kodak EasyShare software which is not only equal to the automatic scan and camera wizard, but is also a great editing program. I personally have a Fuji camera and it came with some software that I prefer to use instead of the automatic scanner and camera wizard.
